CLEANING, SANITISING AND DISINFECTING ARE NOT THE SAME THING They get used interchangeably and it matters clinically. Cleaning removes soil and organic matter physically. Disinfecting kills organisms on a surface. The order is not optional: disinfectant applied over organic soil is largely wasted, because the soil shields what is underneath and can neutralise the chemical. A surface that has been sprayed but not cleaned first can look done and not be. So we clean first, then disinfect, and we respect contact time — the period a disinfectant has to stay wet on the surface to work. Wiping it straight off is the single most common mistake in medical cleaning, and it turns a disinfection step into a cosmetic one. COLOUR CODING, AND WHY IT IS NOT OPTIONAL Cloths and mops are colour coded by zone so equipment never travels from a dirtier area to a cleaner one. Bathrooms have their own colour, clinical areas another, kitchen and staff areas another again. A single cloth carried from a toilet to a treatment room undoes everything else on the list. That is not us being unhelpful — segregating and disposing of clinical waste is the practice's clinical responsibility, and a cleaner handling it creates both a real injury risk and a compliance problem for you. We work around those items, tell you if a sharps container is overfull or a bin is in an unsafe spot, and clean everything else. Any cleaning company willing to empty your sharps bins is telling you something about how they operate. ROUTINE AND TERMINAL CLEANS Routine cleaning is the scheduled work: waiting room, reception, bathrooms, staff areas, corridors, and treatment rooms to the agreed standard. Terminal cleaning is the deeper reset after a known exposure or on a periodic schedule, taking in surfaces that routine cleaning does not reach. Most practices need routine cleaning frequently and terminal cleaning periodically. We will tell you honestly if we think your interval is wrong in either direction, rather than selling you the more expensive option by default. DOCUMENTATION FOR YOUR AUDITS Practices going through accreditation get asked to show that cleaning is specified, scheduled and actually happening. We provide a written scope, a schedule, and a record of visits, so the evidence exists before an auditor asks rather than being reconstructed afterwards.
